WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Houston Cougar women's tennis team faced off against William & Mary in a nail-biting match, with the Cougars pulling off the upset over the No. 32 ranked team in the nation 4-3, on Friday in Williamsburg, Va.
Despite only having five players for today's match, the Coogs started the day strong with victories on both doubles courts. Despoina Vogasari and Rocio Martin conquered court one, defeating Marie Faure and Elizaveta Nemchinov 6-2, while Tina Rupert and Mina Markovic joined up to take down Lauren Goodman and Maria Groener 6-4 on court two.
Singles started with an even score since Houston was unable to fill court six, but the Cougars were not phased and quickly regained the lead with Markovic locking down court two in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 over Faure. Rupert kept the momentum going and secured a victory on court four 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 against Julia Casselbury, leaving Houston one point away from victory.
With the match hanging in the balance, Vogasari answered that call. After dropping the first set 6-4 to Nemchinov, Vogasari would fight back to take sets two and three 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the match for Houston. The win for Vogasari was her 20th this season, and she has now accomplished that feat in all three seasons.
The Tribe followed the Houston victory with two final points on courts three and five, with Martin falling to Goodman 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) and Angela Lorenzo falling to Olivia Thaler 5-7, 6-3, 5-2.
