Houston Football Spring Practice #1

The Houston Football program returned to the practice field Monday for the first time since defeating Florida State in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, and if an offseason of workouts featuring giant question marks on their backs did not solidify the message that 2016 is a new season, head coach Tom Herman certainly did so Monday.
"We wanted our guys to know that what they did last year means nothing," Herman said. "Everybody is a question mark right now, even if you are a three-year starter, two-year starter, whatever. It doesn't matter who you are or what you did last year. What matters is what are you going to do to prepare to win a championship this year?"

The spirited two-hour session featured players in helmet and shells and featured 24 players who have earned starting experience throughout their Houston careers. There are holes left to fill, however, as 19 players with starting experience have moved on from the Houston program.
In addition to replacing holes on the field, Houston will also look to replace several valuable leaders including all four of last year's captains â€" Alex Cooper, Kenneth Farrow, Adrian McDonald and Elandon Roberts.
"Elandon Roberts is not walking through that door," Herman said. "Kenneth Farrow, Adrian McDonald, Alex Cooper, those guys are gone. They're not coming back."
Spring Practice Notes:
Senior cornerback Brandon Wilson will miss the 2016 spring practice session after undergoing a scope of the knee … With the graduation of starting punter, the competition for position is open this spring and includes backup quarterback Kyle Postma who went through punting workouts Monday with redshirt-freshman punter Blake Boyles … Monday's practice marked the first Houston practice for seven newcomers from the 2016 class â€" QB Kyle Allen, SAF J.J. Dallas, TE Alex Leslie, WR Terry Mark, OT Na'Ty Rodgers, QB Bowman Sells and SAF Terrell Williams â€" while an eighth member counted against the 2016 signing class, RB Duke Catalon, began practicing with the Cougars last fall.
Houston returns to the practice field Wednesday and Thursday of this week before taking a week off for Spring Break. Following Spring Break, the Cougars return to the field on March 22 as part of 15 spring practices that conclude with the 2016 Red & White Game at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 16, at TDECU Stadium.
