PROVIDENCE, R.I. â€" University of Houston Women's Tennis junior Despoina Vogasari was named American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. The weekly conference award is the sixth of Vogasari's career.
Vogasari won the award after helping the Cougars to two doubles victories, as well as picking up a key singles victory in the team's upset win over No. 51 New Mexico on Saturday.
Vogasari would defeat Andrea LeBlanc on the No. 1 singles court 6-3, 6-2 to give Houston one of the points that led to the 4-3 victory. The victory for Vogasari was her 16th singles victory of the season. Earlier against the Lobos, Vogasari teamed with Rocio Martin to defeat New Mexico's No. 1 doubles team of Dominique Dulski and Emily Oliver 6-2.
The following day, Vogasari and Martin would again be on the No. 1 doubles court facing Dayna Lord and Alyza Benotto of the No. 73 Brown Bears. Though the Cougars fell in the match, the duo won their doubles competition 6-3 en route to helping Houston secure its fourth consecutive doubles point.
The American Player of the Week honor is the first of the season for Vogasari, who last claimed the award on February 10, 2015.
