Softball Earns 2-1 Win Over Tulsa

HOUSTON â€" Strong bats and tough pitching led Houston Softball to a huge 2-1 win over Tulsa Friday evening at Cougar Softball Stadium.
The Cougars (15-14) evened the series with the Golden Hurricane (22-6) with the 2-1 win, marking the first American Athletic Conference victory of the season. The two will meet tomorrow for a rubber match at noon.
Senior LHP Julana Shrum had a very impressive outing as she threw 5.2 innings, didn't allow an earned run and struck out two. Junior RHP Shelby Miller came in relief and threw a perfect 1.1 innings.
Offensively, senior Katie St. Pierre knocked two singles and drove in the Cougars two runs of the game. She also recorded her 11th stolen base of the season and 56th of her career. St. Pierre is just five away from tying the stolen base career record and is seven away from her season high.
The Cougars had bases loaded and two outs when St. Pierre slapped a base hit into right center to score two runs.
Houston's defense held Tulsa scoreless through the first five innings and allowed a single run in the top of the sixth. The Golden Hurricane capitalized on three hits and two Cougar errors to score their only run of the game.
