Houston Softball Drops Conference Opener

HOUSTON â€" Houston Softball fell 11-2 to Tulsa in the American Athletic Conference season opener Thursday night.
The Cougars fall to 14-14 on the year and 0-1 in conference while the Golden Hurricane improves to 22-5, picking up the first conference win of the season.
After a scoreless frame by both teams, Tulsa opened a 5-0 lead in the top of the second. The Golden Hurricane capitalized on three hits and a Cougar error to take the lead.
Tulsa added another run to its lead, scoring on a wild pitch.
During the bottom of the fourth inning, the Cougars put one on the board when freshman Maya Thomas slapped a leadoff infield single to third base. Senior Megan Noel followed with a one-out base hit into the outfield, moving Thomas to second. Kaylin Crumpton loaded the bases with a single into center. With two outs and bases loaded, freshman Brooke Vannoy forced an error by Tulsa's first baseman Jocelyn Sheffield, plating the Cougars first run of the game.
Tulsa went on to add five more runs over the next three innings to seal the win.
The Cougars strung three hits together in the bottom of the sixth to add another run, but the rally was cut short.
Crumpton led the Cougars as she went 2-for-3 against the conference's top pitcher. Freshman Elise LeBeouf followed with a 2-for-4 performance, knocking in one of the Cougars two runs.
Junior RHP Shelby Miller (4-1) was handed her first loss of the season. She threw one inning, allowed three earned runs and four walks.
NEXT AT BAT
Houston and Tulsa continue the series tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. Tomorrow is 90's Day. Fans are encouraged to dress in their favorite 90's gear. First 200 fans through the gates will receive a free UH fanny pack. The series concludes on Saturday with a noon start.
