Home Runs Highlighted Softball Sweep

HOUSTON â€" Five home runs and 25 runs scored highlighted Houston Softball's doubleheader sweep over Sam Houston State on Tuesday.
The Cougars (14-13) took game one 10-8 before run-ruling the Bearkats (6-19) 15-4 in five innings. Game two marked Houston's sixth run rule victory of the season.
Freshman Rachel Hill knocked in eight of the Cougars runs with her first two collegiate home runs and a double between the two games.
Freshman Brooke Vannoy hit her second and third career home runs, one in each game.
Houston 10, Sam Houston State 8
The Cougar bats roped in four home runs in the 14-hit performance to lead Houston to a 10-8 victory over Sam Houston State.
Houston jumped out to a 3-1 lead when Hill belted her first collegiate home run to left center.
SHSU was up 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth before Hill hit her second straight home run over the left field fence to tie the game 4-4.
The following inning, the Bearkats scored two more runs off four hits. But the Cougars responded quickly when Vannoy recorded her second collegiate home run to open the bottom of the fifth.
Sam Houston State went on to score two more runs to take another lead 8-6, but senior Courtney Klingler sealed the Cougars win in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer.
Junior Shelby Miller (4-0) earned the win for the Cougars as she pitched 1.1 innings in relief and allowed only one hit.
Houston 15, Sam Houston State 4 â€" 5 inn.
Two five-run inning sealed the run-rule win for the Cougars in game two of the doubleheader.
The Cougars were down 4-3 heading into the bottom of the second when Vannoy connected on a 1-0 pitch sending it straight over the centerfield fence, plating two runs. Hill knocked three more runs in with a double to the right center fence to put Houston up 8-3.
Houston's defense held the Bearkats scoreless for the next three innings while the Cougars kept the bats swinging.
Houston scored another five runs in the bottom of the third sparked by freshman Presley Bell who doubled to left center, plating the first run of the inning. Senior Katie St. Pierre hit a two-out triple down the left line to score three more runs for the Coogs.
Freshman Presley Bell (4-4) came in relief for starting pitcher Julana Shrum. She pitched 3.1 scoreless innings and didn't allow a hit while striking out three.

Houston Softball closes out its homestand this weekend when the Cougars host Tulsa in the American Athletic Conference opener. UH takes on the Golden Hurricane on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at noon.
