Romero Named American Pitcher of the Week
3/21/2016 12:00:00 AM | Baseball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. â€" Houston Baseball sophomore Seth Romero was tabbed American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week following his complete game performance that featured a career-high 13 strikeouts in a win over Grand Canyon.
Romero fired a one-hit bid in a complete-game, nine-inning performance to move to 3-0 on the year. In the win, he allowed just two walks and one unearned run.
The West Columbia, Texas native became just the eighth Cougar all-time to fire a one-hitter in 9.0 innings and was the first to accomplish that feat since Austin Pruitt tossed a one-hitter in a shutout at Texas State on Feb. 23, 2013.
The 13 strikeouts marked a career-best for the southpaw, surpassing his previous high of 11, which came a week ago at Alabama.
Romero allowed just four bases runners and kept Grand Canyon at bay, striking out at least one Lope in eight of the nine innings, while striking out the side in the first inning.
Romero lowered his ERA to 0.78 and increased his strikeout total to 32 in 23.0 innings pitched.
Houston had two student-athletes earn a spot on the American Weekly Honor Roll in junior Andrew Lantrip and freshman Joe Davis.
Lantrip earned his spot after firing his first career complete game shutout and fourth complete game of his career vs. GCU. The right-hander struck out seven and didn't allow a run or walk, while surrendering just two hits for his third win of the year.
Lantrip continues to lead the nation with a 39:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and lowered his ERA to 1.53.
Davis hit .368 (7-for-19) with two doubles, one home run and four RBI in the 5-0 week.
USF's Coco Montes was named the league's Player of the Week.
Romero's honor is the third Pitcher of the Week honor for Houston this season and second straight as Andrew Lantrip earned the recognition last week and John King following week 1. Connor Wong was also tabbed American Player of the Week once.
