Houston Softball Wins Thriller In Extra Innings

HOUSTON â€" Houston Softball won a thriller in extra innings before dropping game two of the doubleheader against Oklahoma State on Saturday.
The Cougars (12-12) picked up a 10-9 win in eight innings, but fell to the Cowgirls (13-12) 12-3 in game two.
Freshman Maya Thomas went 5-for-8 against the Cowgirls including four bunt singles. She also recorde two stolen bases.
The two teams will face off in a rubber match tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for noon.
HOUSTON 10, Oklahoma State 9 â€" 8 innings
Oklahoma State opened up with a five-run first inning, but the Cougars quickly responded with a two-run during the bottom half.
With two outs and a runner on, senior first baseman Courtney Klingler launched a two-run bomb over the left center fence to put Houston on the board.
Houston went on to add four more runs in the next two innings to take a 6-5 lead kickstarted by freshman Brooke Vannoy. Junior Shelby Miller grounded out to short, plating Vannoy from third. Freshman Maya Thomas followed with another infield single to reach base. With two outs, freshman Savannah Heebner stepped up and slapped a two-run double down the left field line.
OSU went on to gain a 9-6 lead in the top of the sixth off two home runs. But Houston did let up and tied the game 9-9 in the bottom half of the inning. The Cougars took advantage of a Cowgirl error and scored three runs off just one hit.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the game went into extra innings. The Cougars held OSU scoreless with a five up, three down inning.
Senior Megan Noel started the rally with a base hit down the right field line. Back-to-back fielding errors by the Cowgirl defense led to bases loaded, one out situation for freshman Elise LeBeouf.
LeBeouf smacked one back up the middle for the walk-off RBI single to put Houston up 10-9 and seal the win.
Junior starting pitcher Shelby Miller earned the no decision as she pitched 6.0 innings, allowed eight earned runs and struck out five. Senior pitcher Julana Shrum (4-3) came in relief for Miller and earned the win for the Cougars. In two innings pitched, she allowed only two hits and struck out one.
Oklahoma State 12, Houston 3
Houston opened game two, scoring a run off a Klingler double. The Cowgirls responded the following half inning and tied it 1-1.
An RBI single into left field by St. Pierre gave Houston the lead 2-1. From there, game two was all Oklahoma State as they scored in all but two innings.
Klingler belted another home run late in the seventh inning, but the rally was cut short.
Shrum (4-4) earned the loss for the Cougars as she pitched 5.1 innings, allowed four earned runs and struck out four.
