PROVIDENCE, R.I. â€"Houston Cougar Women's Tennis junior Despoina Vogasari has been named American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, marking back-to-back weeks she has claimed the honor. The weekly conference award is the seventh of Vogasari's career.
Vogasari claimed the award after picking up three doubles victories on the weekend, and finishing with a 2-1 record on the singles court, including a win over No. 100 Gabriela Talaba of Texas Tech. Vogasari wasted no time handling, the higher ranked Talaba with a straight set victory 6-4, 6-1 on the top singles court against the Red Raiders.
Vogasari teamed up with Rocio Martin in doubles play for all three of the Cougars matches last weekend, including a 6-2 win over the Texas Tech duo of Talaba and Alex Valenstein. The pair also picked up victories over Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia (6-3) of No. 24 Kansas, and Ipek Birol and Sade Atkinson (6-3) of Tulane to begin the weekend. Vogasari and Martin extended their doubles winning streak to four with the weekend sweep of doubles play.
Vogasari began the weekend with a straight-set sweep of Birol, defeating the Green Wave's top player 6-4, 6-4.
