HOUSTON â€" For the second consecutive day, the Houston Cougar women's tennis team fell just shy of an upset bid of a nationally ranked opponent as the Cougars fell to No. 24 Kansas, 4-2 at the Houston Country Club on Sunday.
The Cougars' first big win of the day came in doubles where Despoina Vogasari and Rocio Martin dominated the top court once again, defeating Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia 6-3. The win for the duo marked the fourth consecutive victory on the doubles court.
However, Houston was unable to secure the other two courts, eventually losing the doubles point. Tina Rupert and Angela Lorenzo faced Summer Collins and Maria Jose Cardona, falling 6-3, while Mina Markovic and Marnie Stokes fell to Anastasiya Rychagova and Smith Hinton 6-2.
Though they dropped the doubles point, another close singles battle ensued for the Cougars, with the first Houston point coming on court two where Markovic defeated Hinton 7-5, 6-3. Rupert followed not long after, grinding out a hard-fought victory on the fourth court over Khmelnitckaia 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
The first Cougar to fall in singles competition was Stokes who was overcome by Cardona 6-4, 6-2 on the sixth court. Later on court three, Rocio Martin dropped an intense first set battle, 7-6 before dropping the second set 6-2.
The toughest loss of the day, however, came on the top court where Vogasari was neck-and-neck with Rychagova all day but fell just shy in each set 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). Lorenzo was in a tied third set competition with Collins 4-6, 6-2, 1-1 at the conclusion of today's match.
