HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar women's tennis team fell to American Conference opponent the Tulane Green Wave 4-3, in a nail-biting match, at the John E. Hoff Courts, on Friday.
Houston got off to a strong start with a pair of 6-3, 6-3 victories in doubles play to take the first point. Despoina Vogasari and Rocio Martin picked up their seventh win of the season on court one by defeating Ipek Briol and Sade Atkinson, while Tina Rupert and Angela Lorenzo teamed up to overcome Elena Muller and Naz Karagoz on court two. On court three Mina Markovic and Marnie Stokes were up 6-5 against Kyla Klier and Jacqui Katz at the conclusion of doubles play.
As singles play began, the team score remained close, beginning with a Tulane victory on court six where Stokes fell to Meredith Maltby 6-2, 6-2. The Cougar's regained the lead when Vogasari cruised over Briol 6-4, 6-4 at the top court. Markovic was the third Cougar to finish, and the last to do so in two sets, falling to Klier 6-3, 6-3 on court two, tying the score at two apiece.
On the fourth court, Martin battled Muller through a close third set, eventually coming out on top for the Cougars 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. However, Lorenzo was unable to hold Katz on court five as she eventually fell 6-2, 4-6, 1-6.
With the overall score tied at three, the match came down to Rupert who was locked up with Karagoz on court three in an intense third set. Despite battling back late in the final set, Rupert was unable to hold the match, falling 5-7, 7-5, 3-6.
