Houston Softball Splits Day Two of Diamond Devil Invite

TEMPE, Ariz. â€" After dropping a heartbreaking 5-3 to No. 21 Minnesota in the first game of the day, Houston Softball regained momentum as the Cougars run-ruled Mount St. Mary's, 9-1.
The Cougars (8-7) have now won five games by 8+ runs this season.
Houston returns to Farrington Stadium tomorrow for a 10 a.m. (CT) first pitch rematch against Minnesota to close the Diamond Devil Invitational.
Minnesota 5, Houston 3
Houston opened with a two-out, two-run home run to left field by senior Courtney Klingler in the bottom of the second.
Senior Julana Shrum led off the inning when she took a ball to the arm. She was moved to second on a bunt single from freshman Brooke Vannoy, who was then picked off at third. With a Shrum on third and two outs, Klingler battled at the plate before taking a 0-1 pitch over the left field wall, scoring two runs.
Two innings later, Minnesota combined four hits and two Cougar errors to plate three runs and take the lead.
Minnesota added to its lead in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer along the left foul pole by starting pitcher Sara Groenewegen.
The Cougars tried to make a comeback in the bottom half of the inning when freshman Elise LeBeouf hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Savannah Heebner.
Senior LHP Julana Shrum (2-2) took the loss for the Cougars as she pitched a complete game allowing only three earned runs and striking out two.
Houston 9, Mount St. Mary's 1
Houston got the bats going in game two of the day, opening with a four-run inning.
Vannoy grounded out to The Mount shortstop to score the Cougars first run. With runners in scoring position and two outs, freshman Maya Thomas knocked a triple into right center plating two more runs. Thomas scored a play later on a passed ball, pushing the Cougars lead to 4-0.
In the top of the fourth, the Cougars led 5-0 until a Heebner hit a two RBI single into right field. The following inning, freshman Rachel Hill sealed the run-rule win with a two-out double to centerfield, plating another two runs.
Freshman RHP Presley Bell (3-2) pitched her fourth complete game of the season as she didn't allow an earned run and struck out two.
