Houston Softball Falls on Final Day of Tourney

TEMPE, Ariz. â€" Houston Softball dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 21 Minnesota on the final day of the Diamond Devil Invitational.
The Cougars are now 8-8 on the year while Minnesota improved to 10-4.
The Gophers opened with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off an RBI single through the right side. Minnesota stretched its lead to 5-0 when the Gophers posted four runs in the top of the fifth off back-to-back home runs.
In the bottom of the fifth, Sophomore Kaylin Crumpton hit a two-out single into left field and stole second to get into scoring position. Freshman Elise LeBeouf followed with an RBI double into left center after a seven-pitch battle at the plate, scoring Crumpton.
Minnesota would add another run in the top of the sixth to seal a 6-1 win.
Crumpton was 2-for-2 on the day while LeBeouf was 1-for-4 with an RBI double, scoring the Cougars only run of the game.
Freshman RHP Savannah Heebner (2-4) threw 4.1 innings, allowed four runs while striking out five. Junior RHP Shelby Miller came in relief for 2.2 innings and allowed only one earned run while striking out two batters.
NEXT AT BAT
Houston Softball returns to Cougar Softball Stadium next weekend as the Cougars host the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic. Houston opens the two-day tournament with Incarnate Word on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and Texas Southern at 4 p.m. The Cougars face Texas Southern at noon on Sunday for the final game of the tournament.
