Thomas Leads Cougars Over Mount St. Mary's

TEMPE, Ariz. â€" Houston Softball opened the Diamond Devil Invitational Friday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Mount St. Mary's at Farrington Stadium.
The Cougars improved to 7-5 on the season and handed the Mountaineers its first loss of the 2016 season.
With one out in the top of the second, the Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Freshman Brooke Vannoy drew a walk and stole second before Maya Thomas smacked an in-the-park home run down the right field line.
It was Vannoy once again who led off with a double into right center. Thomas laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Vannoy over to third. The following play, Vannoy came home on a fielding error by Mount St. Mary's second baseman putting the Coogs up 3-0.
Junior RHP Shelby Miller (1-0) pitched her first complete game of the season. She allowed eight hits while striking out three.
The Cougars return to Farrington Stadium tonight as they face No. 17 Arizona State at 8:30 p.m. (CT). The game will be broadcasted on the PAC 12 Digital Network on TheSunDevils.com.
