HOUSTON -- After a successful weekend at home, the Cougars return to John E. Hoff Courts to take on fellow American Conference foe UConn on Friday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m.
The Cougars are coming off of a weekend sweep against Prairie View A&M and Southern on Feb. 20. Houston began both matches strong by securing the doubles points and finished the day with two perfect 4-0 scores. Senior Rocio Martin finished the weekend 2-0 and also teamed with junior Despoina Vogasari to sweep each of their doubles matches on the weekend. Sophomore Angela Lorenzo also had a perfect 2-0 weekend, as well as a doubles sweep with teammate Marnie Stokes.
Houston will be the fifth opponent the Huskies will face on the road this season, while UConn holds a 4-2 overall record. Most recently UConn returned home from New York, N.Y. with losses to both Cornell and Albany 4-3 Feb. 12-13. The team finds most of their strength on their top three singles courts, led by Srna Stosljevic, who is 14-7 overall, at the No. 1 position. Stoslijevic is backed by Emma Alderman, 12-6, and Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva, 14-5, who usually cover the second and third singles courts.
Facing Stosljevic on the top singles court this weekend will be Vogasari who is 14-8 overall heading into the weekend. This will not be the first encounter for Vogasari and Stosljevic after the duo faced off in Connecticut with Vogasari coming out on top 6-2, 6-2, almost a year ago to the day.
Free pizza will be available for Friday's match while supplies last, and the first 50 fans to drop a business card in the tennis ball at the Fan Experience table will be entered to win a free one-hour lesson with Head Coach Courtney Steinbock.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
Houston will continue their home stretch on John E. Hoff Courts next weekend as they host New Mexico on March 5 at 1 p.m. The Cougars will battle Brown University the following day at the Houston Country Club with the first serve scheduled for 11 a.m.
