HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar women's tennis team is back from the road and will kick off its nine-match home streak with a double header on Saturday, Feb. 20 against Prairie View A&M at 10 a.m., followed by Southern University at 3 p.m. at the John E. Hoff Tennis Center.
The Prairie View A&M Panthers hold a 2-6 overall record entering this weekend. Playing at the No.1 singles spot and holding the leading singles record for the Panthers is Neharika Rama. Rama picked up a singles victory in PVAMU's most recent match against UTâ€"Permian Basin, by coming back from a first set loss of 2-6 to dominate the next two sets 6-3, 6-0.
Prairie View A&M's two wins for the season have both been home matches, leaving the Panthers in the hunt for the first road victory. After facing the Cougars, Prairie View will travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on Incarnate Word.
Houston will follow the first match Saturday, by taking on the Southern Jaguars. Saturday's contest will be only the fourth match this spring for the Jaguars, who hold a 0-3 record. The Jaguars most recently fell to Southeastern Louisiana 5-2. However, picking up a 6-3, 6-4 win on the first singles court was Laura Syori, who leads Southern at the No. 1 singles position.
The Cougars recently traveled to College Station, Texas to face No. 16 Texas A&M, but came up short of a victory, falling 6-1. Rocio Martin did find success on the Aggie courts however, coming home with her fourth singles win of the season 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7).
