Houston Softball Wins Shutout in Opener

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Houston Softball picked up a shutout win over Tennessee Tech in the season opener, 4-0, before dropping 9-1 to Mississippi State on day one of the Bulldog Kickoff Classic.
The Cougars return to the field tomorrow morning as they face Georgia Southern at 11:30 a.m. Houston wraps up day two of the tournament with a 7 p.m. nightcap against Alabama A&M.
Houston 4, Tennessee Tech 0
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first inning. With bases loaded, a passed ball by Tennessee Tech's catcher allowed sophomore Kaylin Crumpton to score the Cougars first run of the season.
Houston scored again with two outs and runners on first and third on a double steal by Katie St. Pierre and Brooke Vannoy to wrap up the second inning and push the Cougars lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, senior pitcher Julana Shrum knocked a lead off double to right field advancing to third on a pop up. With two outs and a runner at third, freshman outfielder Maya Thomas slapped a triple into right center scoring Shrum. A Brooke Vannoy single scored Thomas to put Houston up 4-0 and seal the win.
Shrum pitched her fifth career complete shutout allowing only 2 hits. Freshman Vannoy went 2-for-2 in her first collegiate appearance.
Mississippi State 9, Houston 1
Errors plagued the Cougars during game two of the day vs. host Mississippi State.
With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, senior outfielder St. Pierre slapped a base hit through the right side to knock in the Cougars run.
Mississippi State had an 8-1 lead heading into the sixth inning. The Bulldogs sealed a win with a walk off single to right center.
Freshman RHP Presley Bell pitched 2.1 innings, allowed on four earned runs. Junior RHP Shelby Miller came in relief for 3.1 innings as she allowed only one earned run while striking out two.
