HOUSTON â€" After leading their team to a 2-0 record, University of Houston guards Rob Gray, Jr., and Galen Robinson, Jr., earned a sweep of the American Athletic Conference weekly honors for the Cougars on Monday.
Gray was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, while Robinson was recognized as the league's Rookie of the Week after leading Houston to wins against conference foes Tulsa and at East Carolina. It was the first weekly honor for each player.
Gray averaged 23.5 points per game, including a career-high 31.5 points at East Carolina in Saturday's thrilling 97-93 double-overtime win. With his impressive performance, the Forest City, N.C., native regained the league in the American Athletic Conference with 17.3 points per game.
Returning to the starting lineup against Tulsa on Wednesday, Gray posted 16 points with a pair of 3-pointers in an 81-66 Houston win.
Robinson led Houston with a career-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and added a game-high four assists in the win against the Golden Hurricane. He scored 10 second-half points as Houston rallied from a second-halftime deficit and finished with 12 points, seven assists in three steals in the win at East Carolina.
Monday's sweep marks only the fifth time in league history that one team has swept both weekly awards. Memphis Shaq Goodwin and Dedric Lawson were the last duo to accomplish that feat on Jan. 18.
