Cougars Open 2016-17 at Reveille Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas â€" The 2016-17 Men's and Women's Track & Field season officially kicks off with a trip to the Texas A&M Reveille Invitational, on Saturday. Houston will compete in College Station to open the year for the ninth consecutive season.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Cougars are expected to have 15 freshmen make their NCAA debuts at the Reveille Invitational, including IAAF World U20 Championship qualifiers Samiyah Samuels, Nathaniel Mechler, Anna Larsson and Klara Mattsson.
On the flip side, five seniors are scheduled to compete in the first meet of their final season, including thrower Damon Thompson. The school record holder in the men's weight throw, Thompson enters the event with a personal-best throw of 62-8 (19.10m).
Two-time American Athletic Conference Champion Amere Lattin is scheduled to return to the track in the 60-meter hurdles, while senior distance runner Brian Barraza is slated to make his return to action after redshirting during the cross country season.

ABOUT THE 2016-17 COUGARS
The Houston men return 93 of their 152 points from last year's American Athletic Conference Indoor Championship team, including NCAA Runner-Up and American Champion in the 60-meter dash Cameron Burrell. Also returning for Houston will be thrower Felipe Valencia, who took the indoor championship in the shot put a year ago.
For the women, 17 freshmen will look to play their part in improving on the team's ninth-place finish from a year ago. A young squad, the women will have just six seniors for the indoor slate, including 2016 American Champion in the outdoor steeplechase Selena Sierra.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars will enjoy a month break from competition before returning to host their first of three indoor meets with the Leonard Hilton Invitational on Jan. 13. The Cougars will also welcome teams to Yeoman Fieldhouse on Jan. 27-28 for the Houston Invitational and on Feb. 10 for the Howie Ryan Invitational.
