Cougars Fall to Temple, 3-0

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-27, 22-25, 15-25) to Temple on Friday night inside Athletics/Alumni Center.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-19 overall and 0-13 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Owls improved to 17-6 overall and 10-3 in league action.
Junior setter Keandra McCardell registered her fifth double-double of the season and 25th overall of her career behind a 13-assist, 13-dig effort.
Junior outside hitter Sarah Afflerbaugh and sophomore middle blocker Chenelle Walker co-led Houston with eight kills each, while freshman outside hitter Megan Duncan registered six kills. Freshman libero Katie Karbo totaled a game-high 18 digs. Sophomore setter Katie Krebs recorded 15 assists.
Temple's Irem Asci led all with 14 kills. Setter Kyra Coundourides posted 26 assists. Libero Mia Heirakuji finished with 15 digs.
The Owls outhit Houston .194-.139, holding a 42-36 advantage in kills, 59-57 edge in digs and 7-4 mark in blocks.
The Cougars forced Temple into five errors early on and got three kills from Walker in taking a 12-8 lead in the opening set. The Owls rallied with a 13-3 run to take a 21-15 advantage. However, Houston responded with a 9-3 run to pull even at 24-24. Later tied 25-25, Temple got a kill from Asci and capitalized on a attack error by the Cougars to seal the set, 27-25.
In the second set, the Owls jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held the advantage for the majority of the stanza. After a Duncan kill and Temple attack error gave the Cougars a 21-20 lead, the Owls closed on 5-1 run to take a 25-22 win and 2-0 lead into intermission.
Up 2-1 in the third set, Temple never trailed the rest of the way en route to a 25-15 victory to close the match in straight sets.
UP NEXT
The Cougars return to action on Sunday hosting UConn in a 1 p.m. first serve. Houston's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be holding a canned food drive at the door. For every two canned food item donations, fans will receive one free general admission.
