Houston Drops 3-1 Match to UConn

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball team fell 3-1 (23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 19-25) to UConn on Sunday afternoon inside Athletics/Alumni Center.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-20 overall and 0-14 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Huskies improved to 15-10 overall and 6-8 in league action.
Junior setter Keandra McCardell registered her sixth double-double of the season and 26th overall of her career behind a 19-assist, 14-dig effort.
Outside hitters Megan Duncan and Sarah Afflerbaugh each recorded double-figure kills posting 15 and 10, respectfully. Freshman outside hitter Faith Squier finished with eight kills.
Sophomore setter Katie Krebs led all with 18 assists, while freshman libero Katie Karbo recorded a match-high 18 digs.
UConn's Kayla Williams and Rebecca Rivera each recorded a double-double performance. Williams finished with 20 kills and 17 digs, while Rivera amassed 22 assists and 13 digs.
The Huskies outhit Houston .240-.181, holding a 60-48 lead in kills, 78-60 advantage in digs and 9-8 edge in blocks.
The opening set saw a total of 17 ties and six lead changes as neither team led by more than three points. Tied 23-23, UConn got a service ace from Elizabeth Kline and capitalized on an attack error by the Cougars in the next rally to take the set.
In the second set, Houston jumped out to an 8-3 lead behind a .571 attack percentage. However, miscues allowed the Huskies to close the gap and pull even at 13-13. The two teams traded points to get to 18-18 before UConn closed on a 7-2 run to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
The Huskies opened the third set with a 7-3 lead. Houston rallied to pull even at 13-13. Two quick points for each side moved the score to 15-15 before a bad set by UConn and combo block from Squier and sophomore middle blocker Chenelle Walker forced the Huskies to take a timeout. The Cougars led the rest of the way en route to a 25-22 victory to keep the match alive.
UConn never trailed in the fourth set taking a 25-19 win to close the match 3-1.
UP NEXT
Houston returns to action on Wednesday visiting Tulane in a 7 p.m. first serve. The Coogs will next play at home on Sunday, Nov. 13, hosting Memphis in a 1 p.m. match.
