HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to No. 21 UConn at Carl Lewis Complex Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston held one of the American Athletic Conference's top team scoreless for the first 73 minutes of the match. The Cougars were able to fend off 19 shots over the majority of the match, with sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Estopare collecting a season-high nine saves, but the Huskies would find the back of the net in the 74th minute of play. Husky forward Erin Spillane was able to connect to the bottom right corner on the ball from Regan Schiappa to break the tie.
The Cougars had momentum to begin the second half with two shots in the opening four minutes of play. At the 47th minute of play, junior Hannah Dauzat had Houston's first shot of the match that was blocked by a husky defender. Defender Margo McEntire had a shot that hit the top of the crossbar in the 49th minute of play. Junior Vanessa Almaguer had a great look at the goal off a cross from Desiree Bowen. Husky goalkeeper Emily Armstrong was able to make a save on Almaguer's shot during the 62 minute of play.
Estopare played all 90 minutes between the posts for the Cougars. The Bend, Ore., native's season-high nine saves gives her 32 saves on the season and through seven games played has allowed only five goals with a 0.68 goals against average.
The Cougars now are 6-4-1 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
