Houston Falls at Memphis, 3-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The University of Houston Volleyball team fell 3-0 (20-25, 25-27, 33-35) at Memphis on Friday night inside Roane Fieldhouse.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-16 overall and 0-10 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Tigers improved to 10-11 overall and 2-7 in league action.
Freshman outside hitter Faith Squier led the Houston attack with 12 kills. Junior outside hitter Sarah Afflerbaugh also finished in double figures with 10 kills.
Setters Keandra McCardell and Halle Evans both just missed double-double performances. McCardell finished with 22 assists and nine digs, while Evans posted 12 assists and nine digs. Libero Katie Karbo anchored the back row with 19 digs.
Memphis' Catlin Lilly led all with 21 digs and 15 kills in a double-double effort. Setters Regan Comperry and Faith Myers finished with 34 and 13 assists, respectfully. Libero Mady Ruhlman dug up 13 balls.
The Tigers outhit outhit Houston .266-.203, leading 56-44 in kills, 66-61 in digs and 5-4 in blocks.
Both teams traded points to open the match and sat tied at 8-8, until Memphis pulled away with a 4-0 run. The Tigers went on to lead by as much as five points in taking the opening set, 25-20.
Memphis jumped out 4-1 lead to open the second set, but the Cougars responded with a 3-0 run to tie things up. The two teams pulled even 15 more times to sit tied at 25-25 until a Tiger kill and Houston error gave Memphis a 27-25 win and 2-0 advantage at intermission.
Both teams battled deep into the third set. Tied 33-all, Tai Bierria recorded consecutive kills to give Memphis the victory in straight sets.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will wrap up their three-match road swing with visits to SMU (Oct. 28) and Tulsa (Oct. 30) next week.
