Houston Falls at SMU in Straight Sets

DALLAS -- The University of Houston Volleyball team fell 3-0 (13-25, 9-25, 20-25) at SMU on Friday night inside Moody Coliseum.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-17 overall and 0-11 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs improved to 17-9 overall and 10-1 in league action.
Junior outside hitters Sarah Afflerbaugh and Brianna Lynch led Houston with eight and seven kills, respectfully.
Making her first career start, sophomore setter Katie Krebs recorded 13 assists, while junior setter Keandra McCardell posted 11 assists. Libero Katie Karbo finished with a match-high 13 digs.
SMU's Lauren Mills posted 11 kills and eight digs. Katie Hegarty finished with 10 kills and seven blocks, while Janelle Giordano led all with eight blocks. Setter Kendall Patterson recorded 27 assists and seven digs.
The Mustangs outhit Houston .358-.081, leading 37-28 in kills and 12-3 in blocks. The Cougars held a 34-32 edge in digs.
SMU took the first two sets 25-13 and 25-9 to hold a 2-0 lead over Houston at intermission.
Down 17-10 late in the third set, the Cougars broke out for a 6-1 run, getting three kills from Lynch, to cut it to 18-16. However, the Mustangs lead never wavered as SMU rode to the 25-20 final to close the match in straight sets.

Houston will conclude its three-match road swing in a 1 p.m. first serve at Tulsa on Sunday.
