HOUSTON --Winners of its first two American Athletic Conference games, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program opens league play inside Hofheinz Pavilion when it plays host to Tulane at 8 p.m., Tuesday.
With road wins at USF and at Temple last week, the Cougars join No. 17 SMU as the only American teams at 2-0 in league play. With the team's dominating 77-50 win at Temple on Saturday afternoon, the 2015-16 Cougars became the first team to be 2-0 in conference games after opening the season with two road games since 1946-47.
Sophomore guard Rob Gray, Jr., led all players with 23 points against Temple as he continued his streak as the only Cougar to score in double digits in every game in which he has played this season. The Forest City, N.C., native leads Houston and the American Athletic Conference with 18.8 points per game and is one of four Cougars among the league's top-20 scoring leaders.
Junior point guard Ronnie Johnson scored 17 points in Saturday's win against Temple, including 11 in the team's 20-5 run to close out the first half. The Indianapolis native leads the Cougars and ranks fourth in the league with an 86.3 free throw percentage.
Senior forward Devonta Pollard ranks second on the team with 14.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. The Porterville, Miss., native joins teammate Damyean Dotson (12.6 ppg; 7.4 rpg) as two of only six players to rank among the American Athletic Conference's top-17 leaders in both scoring and rebounding and makes Houston to only school with two student-athletes in that exclusive group.
Through their first 14 games, the Cougars have already equaled their home win total (9) from a year ago in nine games and will equal their win total from all of last season (13) with a win against Tulane on Tuesday night.
