HOUSTON - Sophomore Bailee Logsdon (pentathlon) and junior Cameron Burrell (invitational long jump) each posted The American Athletic Conference's top marks of the season to claim titles Friday in the first day of competition at the Houston Invitational held in Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Logsdon posted a personal-best pentathlon score of 3,486 points as she posted PRs in all five events Friday, claiming wins in four of the five events. The total bested The American's previous best of 3,041 points from Cincinnati's Maggie Loeffler.
Logsdon opened her day with a win in the 60-meter hurdles, running a personal best of 8.78. She followed up with a personal-best clearance of 4-10.25 (1.48) in the high jump before recording a PR of 35-5.25 (10.80) in the shot put to win the event.
The Huffman, Texas, native and UH Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president would win the next two events with a personal-best jump of 17-9.00 (5.41) in the long jump before closing with a time of 2:31.46 in the 800-meter run.
Taking just one jump, Burrell posted an indoor personal best of 24-9.75 (7.56) to claim the invitational division of the men's long jump. Friday's jump gave Burrell the top jump in The American this year by over one foot, topping the previous best of 23-4.75 (7.13) from USF's Jonah Daniels.
The day started off with a PR in the women's weight throw as freshman Taylor Scaife extended her personal best in the event with a throw of 53-7.50 (16.34) to finish fourth in the event. The throw was an improvement of over seven inches from Scaife's previous best of 53-0.00 (16.15) at the Reveille Invitational.
True freshman Haley Houston improved her PR in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-7.50 (3.85) to finish fourth overall and third among all collegians. The height is the fourth-best in The American this season.
The American's top hurdler, Isaac Williams, qualified for Saturday's semifinals in the event by winning his heat with a time of 7.82 to lower his conference lead while moving to 10th nationally in the event. True freshmen Marcus McWilliams and Amere Lattin took the next two spots on The American's performance list as McWilliams automatically qualified for the semifinals by winning the heat with a personal best 7.93 while Lattin followed closely behind to qualify on time with a PR of 7.94.
On the women's side of the 60 hurdles, sophomores Kelsey Roy and Christina Tillett both advanced to the semifinals with Roy running 8.91 and Tillett running a personal-best 8.95.
The women's 60-meter dash saw two from the Houston program advance to Saturday's semifinals as junior Tori Williams automatically advanced by winning her heat with a time of 7.58, as did senior Kelli Hardnett with a time of 7.69.
The men's 60 saw five from UH advance to the semifinals as Mario Burke (6.75), Marcus McWilliams (6.81), Xavier Floyd (6.87) and Isaac Williams (6.91) all won their heats to automatically advance while James Arnett (6.92) advanced on time to Saturday's next round.
Burke's time marked a personal best and the fourth-fastest time in The American while McWilliams' time put the first-year Cougar in fifth on The American's performance chart as Houston owns four of the top five times in the conference this season.
Day two of the Houston Invitational kicks off Saturday at 9 a.m. with the men's and women's shot put and the women's long jump. Running events open at 12 p.m. with the women's 60-meter hurdles semifinals.
