Houston Softball Picked to Finish Third in Conference

PROVIDENCE, R.I â€" Houston Softball was picked to finish third in the 2016 American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Cougars earned 27 total points and a first place vote by the league's six other head coaches.
Houston closed out the 2015 season with a 28-27 overall record and 10-7 in the American Athletic Conference to finish third. The Cougars defeated Memphis, 1-0, in the opening round of the conference tournament, but fell in the semifinals to Tulsa.
The Cougars open the 2016 season on the road at the Mississippi State Bulldog Kickoff Classic in Starkville, Miss., on Feb. 12-14. Houston opens the home slate the following weekend as the Cougars host Toledo, Iowa State, Ball State, Jackson State and Texas for the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational (Feb. 19-21).
UCF was picked as the preseason favorite to claim the 2016 American Athletic Conference softball title in voting by the league's seven head coaches. The Knights received four of the seven first place votes.
Tulsa finished second in the preseason poll with 31 points and garnered two first-place votes after posting an overall record of 36-18 and a second place finish in The American with 12-6 record.
Points for the preseason poll were awarded on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis and coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
