HOUSTON - Houston quarterback Greg Ward Jr. has been named a Star of the Week by The Manning Award for his performance in Houston's 59-14 win over Texas State.
Houston fans can vote for Ward as the best performance from this past weekend on the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page. When voting closes on Friday at 11 a.m. (Central) for the field of eight, the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.
Ward earned the honor after accounting for six total touchdowns Saturday night with a career-high four passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in 39 minutes of action, leaving the game with six minutes left in the third quarter.
Ward narrowly missed his second 100-yard rushing game of the year, finishing the night with 91 yards rushing on 10 carries and 274 passing yards on 17-of-21 passing. Ward distributed his four touchdowns to three different receivers â€" Demarcus Ayers (2), Chance Allen and Steven Dunbar.
Monday's honor marks the second time this season Ward has received the honor after being named a Star of the Week after Houston's 34-31 win at Louisville.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
