Houston Volleyball Falls to Tulsa in Five

HOUSTON â€" Houston Volleyball dropped a heartbreaker to Tulsa in five sets (25-16, 26-24, 20-25, 18-25, 8-15) Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars fall to 11-3 on the season, 1-1 in conference play while the Golden Hurricane improve to 6-8, 1-1 in the American Athletic Conference. The match marked the first five-set loss of the season for the Cougars.
Houston opened the match with a 25-16 win. During the first set, the Cougars hit .333 as a team while holding Tulsa to a .097 hitting percentage. The Cougars were very efficient on the attack during the first two sets as they committed only two errors heading into the intermission.
Tulsa came out of the half and won three straight. The third set was a battle back and forth between the two teams. Tied at 10-10, Tulsa went on a 4-1 run forcing Houston to use a timeout. From there, Tulsa stretched its lead with a couple kills and several Cougar errors. Head Coach Kaddie Platt took her final timeout to try to regain momentum for the Cougars.
The Cougars pulled within two, down 19-17, but Tulsa ran away with the set with five straight kills, four coming from junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon. Tulsa clenched the 25-20 win to force a fourth set.
In set four, Tulsa pulled out to a 5-1 lead forcing a timeout by the Cougars. It was all Tulsa through the end of the set as the Golden Hurricane hit .394 while holding Houston to .111. Tulsa pulled off a 25-18 win to force the fifth decisive set.
Tulsa captured the match win with a 15-8 win in set five. The Golden Hurricane once again hit over .350 in the set while holding the Cougars offense.
Houston posted a season best 12.0 blocks as a team.
Freshman Brookah Palmer recorded her fifth double-double of the season as she led the Cougars with 15 kills (.200 hitting average) and 12 digs. Redshirt Freshman Chenelle Walker followed with nine kills and seven blocks against the Golden Hurricane. Junior transfer Claire McCown posted six kills, hitting .300, with two digs and three blocks.
Senior libero Olivia O'Dell tallied 19 digs in the five set match for her 14 consecutive double-digit dig match.
NEXT SERVE
The Cougars return to the court next weekend as they travel to the Florida schools. Houston is set to face USF on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) and UCF on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT).
