INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - University of Houston Senior Woman Administrator DeJuena Chizer begins a five-year term on the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee on Tuesday. Chizer is the first UH representative to serve on the 10-person committee, which annually selects, seeds and brackets the field for the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship.
"It's an honor to represent the University of Houston on the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee," Chizer said. "Serving on this committee comes with great responsibility, and I look forward to helping my distinguished colleagues select the most deserving 64 teams for the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in March."
"We are excited to have DeJuena join the NCAA Women's Basketball Committee," said Chris Dawson, Pac-12 Conference Associate Commissioner of Sport Management and the Chair of the Women's Basketball Committee. "Her understanding of the game from her many years of coaching, balanced by her administrative experience, gives her the perfect skill set to engage in the challenging task of selecting and seeding teams in the Tournament."
Chizer and the full selection committee will meet several times throughout the season before convening in Indianapolis in early March to select the 64-team field for the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship, which will be revealed on Monday, March 14, 2016. The Championship begins with First Round action on Friday, March 18, 2016 and ends on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 with the National Championship Game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Chizer has served as Houston's SWA since 2008. In that role, she supervises each of UH's female athletic programs while also sharing in the overall governance of the athletics department. Chizer is also UH's senior women's administrative liaison to the American Athletic Conference office.
Prior to taking on her role as SWA, Chizer served as an assistant coach with the Houston Women's Basketball program from 2000-08. The Cougars qualified for the postseason four times during Chizer's tenure on the sidelines, including NCAA Tournament bids in 2004 and 2005.
A native of Port Arthur, Texas, Chizer (formerly Carter) was a standout member of the Houston Women's Basketball team from 1983-87. Chizer was an All-Southwest Conference selection as a senior, when she led the Cougars with 18.1 points per game. She ranks ninth in program history with 305 career assists and 20th in the UH record books with 1,102 career points.
