NEW YORK, N.Y. -- University of Houston Head Coach Ronald Hughey recently participated in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Center for Coaching Excellence, an elite leadership training program held June 8-10 on the campus of Columbia University. Hughey was one of just 36 coaches invited to take part in the annual event.
"It was a great honor to participate in the 2015 Center for Coaching Excellence, and I can't wait to share what I learned at the program with our staff and student-athletes here at Houston," said Hughey. "Professional development and continuing education are things that I value greatly, and the opportunity to spend three days immersed in the Center for Coaching Excellence was something I could not pass up."
Throughout the three-day program, Hughey and 35 other NCAA head women's basketball coaches worked through a rigorous curriculum that taught dynamic leadership techniques and ethics training specifically geared toward the challenges faced by modern-day coaches. Sessions included collaborative learning, interactive training sessions and group projects. Lectures and panel discussions were held daily and featured many of the brightest minds in college basketball.
"I'd like to personally thank the WBCA and Columbia University for providing a forum for coaches like myself to learn invaluable leadership skills, and UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma for his financial support of this endeavor," said Hughey. "(WBCA Executive Director) Danielle M. Donehew, (Columbia University Advisor on Athletics Issues) Dr. Dianne Murphy and (Program Facilitator) Dr. Cathie T. Siders are to be commended for designing a program that greatly impacted the way I will lead young women going forward."
Hughey will begin his second season as Houston's head coach in November.
