Kyle Dowdy Tabbed American Pitcher of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- For the third consecutive week, Houston Baseball has produced the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week as junior Kyle Dowdy earned his second weekly honor, being tabbed this week's honoree after helping the Cougars to a series win on the road at Tulane.
Dowdy tossed his second complete game shutout of the season in a 3-0 win at Tulane on Saturday, allowing just four hits, two walks, while striking out six en route to his seventh win of the season.
Dowdy would retire the first six hitters he faced at Tulane, before allowing a leadoff single in the third. That runner was erased on the Cougars' first of three double plays on the afternoon.
Tulane made its biggest threat in the seventh inning after a two-out single and walk put runners at first and second -- the only inning where the Green Wave had the tying run at the plate, but Dowdy was able to induce an inning-ending flyout to keep Tulane off the board and preserve the shutout.
The San Diego, Calif. native is now 7-1 on the year with a 2.77 ERA in 15 appearances and eight starts.
With that win, Dowdy has now won four straight starts and has gone the distance in two of the four.
Dowdy is the third straight Pitcher of the Week for the Cougars after Seth Romero claimed the honor a week ago after earning a save and win in a series victory on the road at USF.
Houston now has had five Pitchers of the Week this season. Joining Romero and Dowdy (April 20) were junior Patrick Weigel (March 16) and sophomore Andrew Lantrip (Feb. 23).
The five Pitcher of the Week honors is the most by a Houston pitching staff since the 2006 season when five honors were awarded.
The American Athletic Conference announced Trey Haberkorn from Cincinnati as the league's Player of the Week.
