Houston Softball Drops Doubleheader at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Houston Softball dropped two games to American Athletic Conference opponent Memphis during Saturday's doubleheader at Tiger Softball Complex.
The Cougars fall to 26-26 on the season, 9-7 in the American Athletic Conference while Memphis improves to 19-32 on the year and 6-11 in conference play.
With the two losses today, Houston drops to third in conference standings.
MEMPHIS 1, HOUSTON 0 - Box Score
Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off two infield singles and an error.
The Cougars had two hits, one from freshman Kaylin Crumpton and one by sophomore Shelby Miller. But the two were stranded on base.
Junior LHP Julana Shrum (11-10) took the loss for the Cougars as she pitched her 10th complete game of the season as she allowed only one earned run, three hits and struck out three. This was the second lowest hits allowed in a complete game by Shrum this season.
MEMPHIS 3, HOUSTON 2 - Box Score
In game two of the doubleheader, Memphis took a 2-0 lead early again off two doubles and a base hit to the outfield.
After five shutout innings, Houston cut the Tigers lead by one.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, junior Katie St. Pierre slapped one to the shortstop and beat out the throw to first. The Memphis shortstop launched the throw into the dugout, advancing St. Pierre to second. Crumpton brought her home with an RBI single into right field.
The following inning, Houston tied the game 2-2 as Shrum led off with a double to the left center gap. Courtney Mica entered the game to pinch run for Shrum and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Klingler and came home on a Memphis wild pitch.
Memphis closed out the game with a walk-off single by catcher Haleigh Ross to pick up the win, 3-2, and clinch the series.
Sophomore RHP Shelby Miller (7-9) picked up the loss for Houston as she pitcher ninth complete game of the season. In 6.1 innings pitched, she gave up three earned runs, off six hits and struck out four.
UP NEXT
Houston Softball closes the 2015 regular season with the series finale at Memphis tomorrow at 11 a.m. Cougars head to the postseason with American Athletic Conference Championships next weekend in Orlando, Fla.
