WACO, Texas -- University of Houston sophomore Despoina Vogasari has learned her draw for the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship, which begins Wednesday at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco. Vogasari, the 77th-ranked player in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, will face No. 25 Caroline Doyle of Stanford on Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT. in the First Round.
Fans can access the NCAA's Tournament Central page, which includes links to live video, live scoring and more, by clicking here.
The winner of Wednesday's First Round battle will advance to face either No. 1 Robin Anderson of UCLA or No. 40 Stephanie Nauta of Virginia on Thursday in the Second Round at a time yet to be determined. The NCAA Singles Championship concludes on Monday, May 25 with the National Championship Match.
Vogasari qualified for the Singles Championship by finishing the regular season as the highest-ranked singles competitor from the American Athletic Conference. A native of Athens, Greece, Vogasari enters the Championship with a 30-8 singles record, including seven victories over nationally-ranked opponents. She won the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship in October and was named American Player of the Year in April.
The sophomore is 4-3 against fellow Singles Championship participants this season and has already defeated a pair of top-25 foes. On Nov. 6, 2014, she knocked off then-No. 15 Zoe Scandalis of USC at the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship in New York, N.Y, 6-1, 6-1. In her most recent contest, on May 8 in Berkeley, Calif., she routed No. 23 Jasmine Lee of Mississippi State, 6-4, 6-2, in the First Round of the NCAA Team Championship.
As a team, Houston fell to Mississippi State in the First Round of the Team Championship, 4-2. The Cougars finished the season with a 22-6 team record, including a program-best 18-match winning streak from May 20 -- April 17, and they topped 11 ranked opponents in team competition.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION |
Doyle is 28-6 this season, including a 10-5 mark against nationally-ranked opponents. The Pac-12 All-Conference selection was 18-3 in dual matches this season and is making her second Singles Championship appearance after advancing to the Second Round last season in her freshman campaign.
Anderson is 23-2 this season, with an impressive 15-2 mark against ranked opposition. She leads UCLA into the NCAA Team National Championship Match on Tuesday night, where they will face Vanderbilt. A senior from Matawan, N.J., Anderson won the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships during the fall season and is a two-time Pac-12 Player of the Year. She has qualified for the Round of 16 at the Singles Championship in each of the last three seasons.
Nauta is 31-14 this season, with a 10-11 mark against top-125 foes. She won the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championship in October and was an All-ACC selection last month. The junior is making her second Singles Championship appearance after being eliminated in the First Round last season.
HOUSTON'S NCAA SINGLES HISTORY |
Vogasari is the seventh singles player to represent the Cougars in NCAA Singles Championship competition, and her individual bid is the 12th in program history. She is aiming to become the third singles All-American in Houston history after Margaret Redfearn (1984) and Kathy Foxworth (1987) each achieved the honor.
Redfearn and Foxworth each advanced to the Round of 16 on the way to earning All-American laurels. The most recent Cougar to compete at the Singles Championship was Sarah Borwell, who made the Second Round in 2002 by defeating Victoria Stolakasova of South Alabama in her opener, 6-2, 6-1.
