Cougars Qualify Seven More for Championship Finals

Storrs, Conn. - The Houston Cougar men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the third day of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships by qualifying seven student-athletes for the finals of their respective events on Saturday, in Storrs, Conn.
The Cougars qualified four sprinters in the 100m dash, with junior LeShon Collins leading the way by running a 10.58 for the second fastest overall qualifying time. Juniors Issac Williams (10.81) and James Arnett (10.85) as well as sophomore Xavier Floyd (10.95) will all compete in Sunday's final.
Williams also qualified for the 110m hurdle final after posting the fastest overall qualifying time of 14.14 to win heat one, while senior Jermaine Fyffe turned in the seventh fastest qualifying time in the 400m at 48.60 to earn the chance to compete on the final day.
In the women's 100m hurdles, senior Sade Mariah Greenidge also posted the fastest overall time. The Bridgetown, Barbados native ran 13.56 into the wind, to win heat two and qualify for Sunday's final round.
The third day of the American Athletic Conference started in dramatic fashion for Houston, as sophomore javelin thrower Jack Thomas needed all sixth throws to claim his top mark of the morning. Thomas threw a new personal record of 69.03m, on his final toss, to finish third in the event and score Houston its first points of the day.
In the women's javelin, senior Angelica Thompson picked up a big point for her team after throwing 42.15m to finish eighth.
Saturday marked the first day of the jumping events for Houston, and the Cougars would find points in all three of those events. Sophomore Morris Olumba finished in a three-way tie for third place after setting a new personal best of 2.01m in the high jump.
Seniors Marc Clerveaux and David Brown scored big points for Houston in the long jump finishing third and fifth respectively. Clerveaux jumped 7.23m to move up from fifth where he stood in the pre-meet rankings, while Brown leaped 7.16m to climb four spots from ninth.
For the women, Alicia Perkins jumped 5.76m to claim eighth in the long jump.
In the distance, junior Selena Sierra placed fourth in the women's 3000m steeplechase after running a 10:58.69, while junior James Broussard placed eighth in the men's 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:28.61.
Heading into the final day of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, the Houston men currently sit sixth in the team standings with 27.5 points, while the women rank seventh with 20 points.
Action for Sunday's final day of The American Championships begins at 9 a.m. CT with the men's shot put. The men's and women's triple jump will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women's shot put at 11 a.m. Field events will conclude with the women's high jump at 11:30 a.m.
Finals for the running events kick off with the women's and men's 4x100m relay starting at 10 a.m., CT and will run on a rolling schedule throughout the afternoon. The finals of the 1500m, 100m and 110m hurdles, 400m and 100m dash, 800m, 400m hurdles, 200m dash, 5000m and the 4x400m relay will all be contested Sunday.
