PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- University of Houston sophomore Tina Rupert was chosen as American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. The weekly honor is the first for Rupert, who is the fifth different Cougar to receive the award this season.
Rupert went 2-0 in singles play last week, with both victories coming at crucial junctures for the Cougars. With Houston and Tulsa tied at 3-all on April 3, the Ljublijana, Slovenia native earned a 7-5, 7-6 (11-9) victory over Marcelina Cichon in a must-win match. Two days later against North Texas, Rupert earned the fourth point in a 4-2 victory with a 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-2 comeback over Agustina Valenzuela.
The sophomore was also a big contributor as Houston won the doubles point over Tulsa. After the teams split the first two matches, Rupert teamed with junior Maria Cardenas for a 7-6 (7-5) win over Cichon and Rongrong Leenabanchong.
Houston has dominated the American Player of the Week award this season, with five different Cougars capturing the award. Sophomore Despoina Vogasari was honored on Jan. 27 and Feb. 10, senior Elena Kordolaimi was the recipient on Feb. 24, junior Rocio Martin took the award on March 3, and Cardenas was the league's top performer on March 10.
Led by the standout quintet, Houston (19-4) is ranked No. 28 in the current Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll and has won a program-record 15 straight matches.
