PROVIDENCE - Houston Cougar sophomore distance runner Brian Barraza has been named the American Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week for his performance in the 1500m run at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational last weekend, on the campus of Rice University.
Barraza clocked the second fastest time in school history in the 1500m when he crossed the line in 3:44.95 to finish third in the event. The El Paso, Texas native just missed setting his fourth program record by finishing 47 hundredths of a second behind Patrick Picciano's record of 3:44.48 set in 1988.
Cougars have now been honored with the American Athlete of the Week award 10 times this season including nine track athletes and one from the field events. Barraza has earned the award twice, having also received the honor on Jan. 10 during the indoor season.
