INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Houston tennis team will find out its postseason fate on Tuesday, when the NCAA Division I Tennis Championship Selection Show is broadcast live on NCAA.com. The announcement of the field of 64 begins at 4 p.m. CT.
Houston (22-5) is ranked No. 29 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll. The Cougars won 18 straight matches from Feb. 20 -- April 17, a school record, and they also set a UH high by defeating 11 nationally-ranked opponents this season.
The first two rounds of the event will be held May 8-10, as 64 teams disperse across 16 campus sites. The 16 teams that advance out of the regional round will meet at the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship, to be held May 15-19 in Waco, Texas.
Senior Elena Kordolaimi leads the Cougars with 32 singles victories, including 24 dual wins, which matches a program record. The Lamia, Greece native went 3-0 at the American Athletic Conference Championship in singles contests and is currently ranked as the No. 106 singles player in the nation.
Sophomore Despoina Vogasari is Houston's highest-ranked singles performer, at No. 81. The Athens, Greece native has won a career-high 29 singles matches this season, including six victories over ranked foes, and she captured the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship in October.
The Cougars are 2-3 all-time in three NCAA Tournament appearances. Houston's first ever bid came in 1997, when they made the second round after taking a 5-3 win over TCU in the opening round. The Cougars were knocked out in their next match, a 5-0 loss to Tennessee.
In 1998, the Cougars qualified for the postseason after winning the Conference USA Tournament. They again won their first round match, 5-2, over Texas A&M, before being eliminated one round later with a 5-0 setback to Arkansas.
Last season, Houston earned their first NCAA bid in 16 years. They were drawn into the College Station Regional and fell in the first round to Texas, 5-0.
