Tennis Pushes Win Streak to Nine

Cougars are 9-0 for first time since 1990 season
HOUSTON — The University of Houston Tennis team won its ninth-straight match to open the season after defeating SFA, 6-1, at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility on Sunday afternoon.
Houston is 9-0 for the first time since the 1990 season when the Cougars won 13 matches in a row to open the season.

The Cougars got out to a fast start in doubles as juniors Valeriia Krokhotina and Iva Sepa blanked Avery Kinsey and Ana Paula Chavez on court two, 6-0.

Junior duo #86 Petja Drame and Elizaveta Morozova pulled away late on court three against Antonella Taco and Alk Giannakogiorgou to clinch the doubles point.

Krokhotina and senior Sophie Schouten made quick work of their opponents in singles as Krokhotina handled Kinsey, 6-0, 6-1, on court five, and Schouten defeated Giannakogiorgou, 6-0, 6-2, on court six.

Houston clinched the match over SFA (0-3) on court three as Sepa defeated Taco, 6-2, 6-1.

Drame dropped just one game on court four as she handled Chavez, 6-0, 6-1.

The Cougars dropped their first point of the season as senior Chems Doha Zeghlouli fell in a set three tiebreaker to Sonja Rooth on court two, 2-6, 6-3, 9-11.

After cruising to a 6-2 set one victory, Morozova fought to the finish defeating Felicia Back, 7-5, in the final set.

The Cougars take a week off before opening Big 12 Conference action against Utah on Thursday, Feb. 26 and BYU on Saturday, Feb. 28. Both matches are at 1 p.m., and are free to the public.
