Houston Softball Sweeps Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. - A six-run seventh inning in game two of the doubleheader led Houston Softball to a two-game sweep over Tulsa Saturday afternoon.
Houston improved to 24-23 on the season, 9-4 in conference play to take sole possession of second place in the American Athletic Conference. Tulsa drops to 29-17 on the year, 8-6 in conference play.
The Cougars picked up their first win on national TV this season.
Both Courtney Klingler and Shelby Miller hit .500 against the Tulsa battery between the two games. Miller belted her second homer of the season in game one while Selena Hernandez blasted her sixth of the season during game two.
HOUSTON 5, TULSA 4- Box Score
Tulsa jumped out to a 2-0 lead off back-to-back singles and an overthrow by catcher Kris Davila.
Sophomore RHP Shelby Miller led off the second inning as she belted her second home run of the season to get the Cougars on the board.
In the top of the fifth, the Cougars tied the game at 2-2 off an RBI single up the middle by senior Selena Hernandez.
Tulsa regained the lead in the home half of the inning off back-to-back walks, a wild pitch and an error.
Houston didn't give up as the Cougars added another run the following inning. Klingler led the charge with a double to the right center gap. Sophomore Jaylin Baldridge entered the game to pinch run at second. She advanced to third on a ground out by McKnight and scored on a wild pitch by Tulsa's Caitlin Sill.
The Cougars made a huge comeback in the seventh inning as St. Pierre led off with a walk and moved to third on a Kaylin Crumpton double to right center. With one out, Miller slapped one to second bast, scoring St. Pierre to tie the game. Shrum reached on a fielder's choice, bringing in the Crumpton on the play to take the 5-4 lead.
Miller (6-7) earned the win for the Cougars. She pitched her sixth complete game of the season. She allowed four runs on six hits, four walks and stuck out two.

HOUSTON 7, TULSA 3- Box Score
Game two started out uneventful until Tulsa took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third off a double by Julie Kernan.
Houston responded two innings later as the Cougars tied the game, 1-1, when a pitch plunked Crumpton for the 18th time this season. Hernandez advanced her to third on a single up the middle. Miller grounded out to second, bringing a run in to tie the game.
Tulsa's Kate Myers homered to left field to regain the lead, 2-1.
With another win on the line and three outs left, Houston jumped on the bats as St. Pierre reached and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Tulsa shortstop. Crumpton brought in the tying run with an RBI single up the middle, advancing to second on the throw. From there, senior Selena Hernandez blasted her sixth home run of the season over the right center fence to gain the lead (4-2) for Houston.
Houston went on to score three more runs off three base hits a walk and an error.
Junior LHP Julana Shrum (10-9) pitched her eighth complete game of the season as she allowed three runs off nine hits and three walks.
UP NEXT
Houston Softball closes out the three-game series against Tulsa tomorrow at noon. The Cougars return to Cougar Softball Stadium for the home finale as they host Lamar for a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 4 p.m.
