TUCSON, Ariz. -- Houston Baseball's Kyle Dowdy was recognized as a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball for his complete game shutout and career-high 13 strikeouts last Saturday against Cincinnati at Cougar Field.
Dowdy went the distance; striking out a career-high 13 Bearcats en route to his fifth win of the season. The right-hander allowed just two hits and didn't surrender a run or walk in the victory.
The San Diego, Calif. native retired the first 12 Cincinnati hitters he faced, before allowing a leadoff double in the fifth. That runner was erased on a 9-4 double play putout. Dowdy finished with the win, facing just one over the game's minimum.
Dowdy has now struck out 10+ hitters in his last two starts and has allowed just one run in those 16.1 innings pitched, while fanned 23. He tossed the team's first complete game shutout of the season.
Dowdy was one of eight National Players recognized by the organization on Monday for their weekly performance. He became the first Cougar recognized nationally since Matt Weston was honored back on April 10, 2006. Dowdy becomes the first Cougar pitcher named to the list by Collegiate Baseball since Brad Sullivan back on April 21, 2003.
