(Editor's Note: "Making a Racquet" is written by senior women's tennis player Charlotte Phillips, who is interning with the Houston Athletics Communications department this semester. Throughout the season, Charlotte will provide a behind-the-scenes look into the Cougar tennis program, including practice stories, match recaps, interesting anecdotes and notes from the road. Today's entry gives fans an inside look in the hard-fought American Championship semifinal win over SMU.)
VOLUME XVI - APRIL 17, 2015
TWO DOWN, ONE TO GO! |
We didn't get off to the most promising start, as SMU was first to take the doubles point on Court 3, but Rocio and Tina quickly turned things around with a win on Court 2. It was now down to the Greeks to pull out the win, and after earning themselves a hard-fought match point, it wasn't to be as SMU got the win, 7-5.
We bounced back from the doubles point with a lot of fire and aggression, ready to turn the score around, and it didn't take long. Elena was first to get the ball rolling, with a win on Court 2, shortly followed by the freshman from Spain, Angela on Court 6. It was now 2-1 and Rocio was next to earn a win for the Cougars to make it 3-1.
We now needed just one more point, as Debbie, Mina and Tina were all battling it out after all losing the first set. It was Mina who earned the fourth point to clinch the match, just as Tina and Deb were both looking to clinch, after making comebacks of their own.
Although the score was 4-1, SMU made us work for it, and it certainly didn't come easy. But with a tough match from today in our back pockets, we couldn't be any more prepared and ready for the final tomorrow.
After narrowly losing in a heartbreaking final in the American Conference Championship last year, we know exactly how it feels, and we are more determined and ambitious than ever to make that title ours!
Hope you can all watch us battle it out for the Championships online, at 1 pm tomorrow! You can tune in at theamerican.org/tennis.
