Houston Softball Sweeps HBU Tuesday

HOUSTON - Two home runs and a grand slam by junior pitcher/designated player Julana Shrum highlighted Houston's two-game sweep over crosstown rival Houston Baptist Tuesday night at Cougar Softball Stadium.
With the two wins Tuesday night, Houston jumps to a 9-12 record while the Huskies fall to 6-10 on the year. Game two marked the Cougars' third run-rule victory of the season.
Shrum led the Cougars' as she went 5-for-6 against the Husky pitching staff with two home runs in the first game and a grand slam during the final inning of game two. She plated 10 runs in the two games and walked twice. In the circle, the Oklahoma native put on a top-notch performance allowing only one run on three hits while striking out five.
HOUSTON 12, HBU 5 - BOX SCORE
Junior shortstop Selena Hernandez connected on a two-run double during the first inning to give Houston a 2-0 advantage. But a four-run second inning for HBU gave the Huskies a 4-2 lead.
Shrum came in relief for starting pitcher Summer Groholski, allowing just one run and three hits for the rest of the game.
But Shrum didn't stop there as she stepped up to the plate and roped a two-run homer over the centerfield fence to tie the game 4-4 in the second inning. Catcher Kris Davila led off the inning taking first after getting hit by a pitch.
Houston's rally continued through the fourth inning. Davila led off with a single to centerfield followed by Shrum's second home run of the game, marking the first game with two home runs by a single player this season.
The Cougars added five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off three consecutive singles loaded the bases to open the inning. With no outs, Husky pitcher Shannon O'Connor walked in a run and was pulled. HBU's third pitcher in relief, Emily Mueller, gave up another Cougar run on a wild pitch.
With one out on the board, Sydney Gerbracht entered the game to pinch hit for Katie St. Pierre and crushed her first triple of the season to right center, plating two more runs for the Cougars.
Shrum (3-5) picked up the win for the Cougars. She pitched six innings allowing only one run on three hits and struck out five batters. Laci Belovsky (4-4) took the loss for the Huskies.
Freshman outfielder Kaylin Crumpton nabbed her 11th and 12th hit-by-pitch of the season.

HOUSTON 19, HBU 3 - BOX SCORE
Houston's 19-3 victory over the Huskies marked the third run-rule victory for the Cougars this season.
A nine-run opening inning launched the Cougars to a 9-0 advantage. Eight of the nine runs scored came across after two outs were on the board.
With two outs, Davila singled to the outfield and advanced to second on a throw while two runs came across the plate. Shrum followed par with a single, scoring Davila. Third baseman Savannah Martin hit her first double as a Cougar to plate Shrum.
With a runner on second, St. Pierre hit an infield single to third base, beating out the throw at first. She advanced Martin to third and stole second the following play. Crumpton knocked a two run double through the left side, pushing Houston's lead to 8-0. Hernandez drew a walk to place runners on first and second. Miller followed with a RBI single to center field, scoring Crumpton.
Houston defense held the Huskies to three shut out innings before HBU racked up three runs on two hits and an error during the fourth inning.
Another nine-run inning by the Cougars sealed Houston's fate. Shrum blasted a grand slam over dead center field highlighting the Cougars' fourth inning rally. Back-to-back singles by Tiffani McKnight and Courtney Klingler followed by a four-ball walk to Davila loaded the bases for Shrum.
Starting pitcher Shelby Miller (2-3) pitched four innings in her second win of the season. She gave up only three runs off four hits and struck out a batter.

Houston Softball travels to Las Vegas, Nev., this weekend for the UNLV Rebel Classic. The Cougars are set to face Eastern Kentucky at 1:15 p.m. (CT) and UC-Santa Barbara at 8 p.m. (CT) on Friday. Houston continues tourney play with a 5:45 p.m. (CT) game against host team UNLV followed by a match up against Iowa State at 8 p.m. (CT) on Saturday. On the final day of play, the Cougars face No. 14/16 California at 11 a.m. (CT).

Parking is available in the TDECU Stadium parking garage with the first 30 minutes free of charge. Regular business hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
All UH main campus students are admitted FREE to regular-season softball home games with a valid student ID.
