LAS VEGAS, NEV. - The University of Houston Softball team put up an impressive 12 runs off 12 hits in the 12-10 win over UC Santa Barbara to close out day one of the UNLV Classic Friday evening.

Houston Softball is now 5-0 when scoring 10+ runs against an opponent. The Cougars improved to 11-12 on the year. Houston opened the day with a 7-2 win over Eastern Kentucky.

The Cougars opened up early with a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Selena Hernandez singled through the left side to score Katie St. Pierre.

UC Santa Barbara took the lead 2-1 the following half inning off two errors, a single and a solo home run.

A six-run second inning gave the Cougars cushion as they took a 7-2 lead. With two outs and bases loaded, Hernandez knocked a two-run single up the middle, scoring St. Pierre and Holland. Shelby Miller followed with a 2 RBI double to right field. Senior Tiffani McKnight followed with a two-run homer over right field fence marking her second HR of the season.

UCSB chopped away with the bats and came within one run late in the bottom of the fifth, but Houston held the Gauchos in the final innings to pick up the win, 12-10.

Starting pitcher Summer Groholski (3-2) took the win for the Cougars. In four innings pitched, she allowed only three runs, five hits and two walks. Relief pitcher Julana Shrum received her first save of the season as she held UCSB to just three hits.

Houston Softball continues tourney play tomorrow after noon as the Cougars face host UNLV at 5:45 p.m. (CT) followed by an 8 p.m. (CT) match up vs. Iowa State. Houston closes out the tournament with game against No. 14/16 California at 1:15 p.m.

All UH main campus students are admitted FREE to regular-season softball home games with a valid student ID.
