Today's entry looks back on Houston's wins over Dartmouth and Tyler Junior College.)
VOLUME XIII - MARCH 31, 2015
LUCKY NUMBER 13 |
It was a successful weekend for the Cougars as we finished this season's matches at the Houston Country Club. Not only did we win two matches back-to-back, but we also made history (yet again) when we hit a 13-match winning streak, equalling a school record that was made 25 years ago, in 1990. Ironically, this is also my 13th blog that I have now written. Coincidence? I think not.
Our first match of the day was against The Ivy League school from New Hampshire, Dartmouth. Not only were we competing on the court, but also off the court, as the Dartmouth fans and alumni had brought their A-game to the Country Club to support the Big Green, loud and clear from the Northeast.
However, the cheering wasn't there for long as the match started with a successful doubles point for us. The Greeks (Elena and Deb) took the first win, shortly before the freshmen (Mina and Angela) won their match also.
Now for the singles matches, and we carried the same aggressive and intense play from doubles into the singles matches. Elena was first to get a victory in singles, although Dartmouth got their first win on the number one court. Mina quickly responded with a win to make it 3-1, just before Tina clinched the match to make it 4-1 and a victory for the Cougars. With a result, we played out the remaining matches, where Maria made the score 5-1, but Dartmouth finished the day with a win on court five to make 5-2 overall.
We couldn't celebrate yet though, as win number 12 was done, but we still had one more to go. The second match of the day was again at the Houston Country Club, against Tyler Junior College. We put the hot weather and fatigue behind us to earn our 13th victory in a row. We started with singles, and if there were any tired legs they were unnoticeable to the people watching, as we soon dominated our way to a 6-0 win.
As always, thanks to our special fans that came to support us in our last matches of the season at the Houston Country Club. We now hit the road to take on fellow Conference rivals, Tulsa on Friday and then North Texas on Sunday.
