AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Houston assistant coach Daniel Whitehead has been hired as the Head Tennis Coach at Concordia University Texas, it was announced today. Whitehead will remain at UH through the end of the 2015 spring season before assuming his full-time duties at Concordia.
"I could not be more excited for this opportunity to lead the Concordia Texas men's and women's tennis programs," Whitehead said. "I would like to thank (Concordia CEO) Dr. Donald Christian and (Concordia Athletic Director) Stan Bonewitz for believing in me and providing me this chance. Concordia is a fantastic institution that provides a well-rounded student-athlete experience, and I am thrilled to be leading the tennis program and be a part of this growing athletics department."
Whitehead will lead both the men's and women's tennis programs at Concordia. He will be in charge of restarting the programs after a seven-year hiatus.
"Concordia has made a brilliant hire. Danny is a man of impeccable character and one of the brightest young coaches in the industry," said Houston Head Coach Patrick Sullivan. "I have no doubt that Danny will build and lead a tennis program that the University and the community can be proud of."
Whitehead has been a key part of the Cougar coaching staff for the last two seasons. In his first campaign, 2014, the Houston native helped the Cougars to a 21-6 record and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998. This season, under Whitehead's tutelage, UH is 17-4 and has won their last 13 matches, tying a program record.
