Houston Softball travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for the final tournament of the 2015 season. The Cougars will play five games in the UNLV Rebel Classic this weekend (March 6-8).
LAST AT BAT |
Houston had short week as the Cougars traveled to No. 22 Texas A&M for a one-game midweek series on Wednesday. The Cougars dropped 6-3 to the Aggies, but freshman outfielder Kaylin Crumpton was the Cougars player of the game.
Crumpton led the Cougars against the Top-25 team as she hit 2-for-3 on the night with two doubles and tallied her 10th hit-by-pitch of the season. She was named to the conference Weekly Honor Roll for her performance against a top ranked opponent.
Houston looks to gain some momentum heading into the UNLV Rebel Classic on March 6-8 in Las Vegas, Nev.
SELENA HERNANDEZ |
Selena Hernandez is one of the Cougars' top hitters this season. She is currently batting .370 with 20 hits, six double, two triples and two home runs while slugging .667.
Hernandez ranks in the top of several batting categories among conference opponents.
| OBP | 6th | .478 |
| Hits | 4th | 21 |
| RBI | 4th | 14 |
| Doubles | t-1st | 6 |
| Triples | t-2nd | 2 |
| Home Runs | 5th | 3 |
| Walks | t-4th | 10 |
On Defense, Hernandez has been a part of half of Houston's 16 double plays turned this season. She also leads the conference with the most assists (59) followed by teammate Shelby Miller (47).
Hernandez has been named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll twice this season for her top performances.
LIGHTNING ST. PIERRE |
Katie St. Pierre is off to another great start this season as she has racked up 24 hits in 19 games. Of those hits, three have been extra base hits and the centerfielder is slugging .467.
St. Pierre has wheels! She is now 7-7 in stolen base attempts. St. Pierre's career best is 15 stolen bases (2013).
As a slap hitter, St. Pierre leads the American Athletic Conference with the highest On Base Percentage (.525) often beating out the throw to first. She also ranks second in the league for the most runs scored and the most hits.
In week two of the season, St. Pierre was named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll for her performance at the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational.
TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM |
Once again freshman outfielder Kaylin Crumpton took one for the team as she was hit by a pitch for the 10th time in the 19 games played this season. She is well on her way to the record books for most HBP in a single season.
Crumpton leads the American Athletic Conference for most hit by pitches this season with 10. Teammate Courtney Klingler follows with just four.
Kendra Cullum broke the school record in 2013 with 38 and is ranked No. 2 in NCAA history for career hit by pitched (89).
DOUBLE THE TROUBLE |
In the 19 games played so far this season, Houston has already turned 16 double plays. Although the Cougars did not turn a double play this week at Texas A&M, it is still part of their goals for the season.
During the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic (Feb. 20-22), the Cougars turned three double plays against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, tied for the most double plays turned in a game.
Last season, the Cougars broke the single season record for most double plays turned (28).
