(Editor's Note: "Making a Racquet" is written by senior women's tennis player Charlotte Phillips, who is interning with the Houston Athletics Communications department this semester. Throughout the season, Charlotte will provide a behind-the-scenes look into the Cougar tennis program, including practice stories, match recaps, interesting anecdotes and notes from the road. Today's entry looks back on Houston's historic win over Texas.)
VOLUME X - MARCH 12, 2015
I'M FEELING 22 |
The number 22 was the number to stand out over the weekend for our team. The Cougars made school history when we got the win against The University of Texas at the Houston Country Club. But this wasn't just any win against the fellow Texas rivals. It was the 22nd time UH had played Texas, and with the score being 21-0 against us in the record books, this win was double the reward!
The number was also significant on Saturday since it was Elena's 22nd birthday, and I am sure the win was an enjoyable birthday present!
As we headed off to the Houston Country Club on Saturday, we knew that playing against Texas wasn't going to be easy. Having lost to the Longhorns at NCAA's the previous year, there was even more determination and fire to get the result we wanted.
After our usual warm-up routine, we soon learned that unfortunately, Texas only had five `healthy' players who were able to compete. This meant that there would be only two doubles matches, on courts one and two, and we were given the match on court three. With only one more match needed to earn the doubles point, it was a race between Elena and Debbie, and Maria and Tina to see who could get it first. Although, it was Texas who claimed the match on court one, making it 1-1. It was an intense match on court two, and after three exciting match points, we got the win to give us the doubles point.
It was then down to singles and again, with Texas only having five in the line-up, I was a tad disappointed that I wasn't able to play my match at number six. However, it did mean that we were now 2-0 up overall, and it was one of my quickest wins - that's for sure!
It was then the birthday girl, Elena, who dominated on court two and used that extra year of wisdom and strength to give us a 3-0 lead. Maria was next to follow suit with a win on court five, clinching the match (yet again!). I think Maria must have a thing for getting the fourth point since it has happened in three of our last five matches; all nail-biting encounters!
We then played out the remaining matches, where Texas took the match on court three, but Rocio earned another win for the Cougars on court five, before Debbie finished the day with a win in three sets on court one, to make it 6-1.
Without a doubt, it was a good day to be a Cougar, and earning the first ever win against Texas made it that little bit more special!
I would like to say an extra big thank you to all our fans that came to support at the Houston Country Club, and especially the members at the club who cheered us on! We would love to have your support and see you again this Saturday at the Country Club, as we go up against the Tigers from Memphis.
Thanks for reading!
Charlotte
