HOUSTON - After winning her first collegiate tournament and leading her team to its first title in program history, University of Houston freshman Megan Thothong was honored Wednesday as the American Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week.
Playing a near flawless round on Tuesday afternoon, Thothong fired a 68 in the Final Round to move up eight spots on the final individual leaderboard at 1-over-par 217.
Starting on No. 2, Thothong began her Final Round on the 6,050-yard, par-72 course at Jacksonville Golf and Country Club with four birdies through her first five holes.
After slipping with a bogey on No. 7, she rebounded with six straight pars and then drained three straight birdies on Nos. 14-16. Although Thothong - whose last name is pronounced Toe-Tong - endured a double-bogey 7 on her final hole of the tournament, she finished with a career- and school-record-low 68.
Her total bested the previous low round of 69, set by Courtney Ferguson (2nd Round, Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational, Oct. 22, 2014; 2nd Round, Central District Invitational, Feb. 17, 2014); Raegan Bremer (1st Round, Central District Invitational, Feb. 17, 2014) and Maddy Rayner (3rd Round, Alamo Invitational, Oct. 28, 2014).
Thothong and her Houston teammates captured the UNF Collegiate team championship by 15 strokes over Texas. It was the first team title for the Cougars in the first season in which they were eligible to compete in team-scoring events.
A year ago, the Cougars started Women's Golf but competed with only three student-athletes as individuals as tournaments, per NCAA rules.
UP NEXT
Following the UNF Collegiate, the Cougars return to action on March 16-17 when they compete at the Wildcat Invitational at Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. Fans should note that this was a recent addition to the Cougars' schedule after earlier published versions.
