GULF SHORES, Ala. - Houston Softball picked up its second win of the season with an 11-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast in six innings during day three of the Sand Dollar Classic.
To start the day, the Cougars dropped a 4-3 decision to Jackson State.
Starting pitcher Summer Groholski picked up the win over FGCU Saturday evening with a one-hit game against the Eagles.
JACKSON STATE 4, UH 3 - BOX SCORE
Houston Softball dropped a 4-3 decision to Jackson State after a late seventh inning rally fell short.
Jackson State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning off three hits and an error. With bases loaded, the Tigers' Ashley Neal knocked a double into left field, scoring three runs.
The Cougars were down 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Senior Jaime Edwards entered the game to pinch hit for designated player Kris Davila. Edwards roped a two-out double to set up the rally. Relief pitcher Julana Schrum knocked an RBI single to right field, scoring the runner.
An RBI single by freshman Kaylin Crumpton pushed Houston 4-3 with two outs in the final inning. Another double by St. Pierre put runners on second and third, the winning run on second base, but a fly out to center field ended the rally and the game for the Cougars.
Shelby Miller (0-2) took the loss for the Cougars, giving up four runs off three hits. Shrum, who came in relief for Miller, pitched 5.1 innings and allowed only 2 hits while striking out six batters.
HOUSTON 11, FGCU 1 - BOX SCORE
Senior pitcher Summer Groholski threw a one-hitter while the Cougar offense knocked 12 hits during Houston's 11-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast.
Groholski (1-1) picked up the win after pitching a complete game and only allowing one run on one hit and stuck out five batters.
Houston opened the game with a leadoff walk by St. Pierre. Hernandez followed with a single up the middle, advancing St. Pierre to second. Senior second baseman Kayla Holland knocked a three-run homer over the left field fence to put Houston up 3-0 in the top of the first inning.
The following inning Houston extended its lead to 6-0 off two hits and an error by FGCU's catcher. The Cougars scored another two runs in the fourth inning to strengthen the lead to 8-0. FGCU responded the following inning scoring a run on a sacrifice fly out.
But a four hits in the sixth inning seal Houston's fate as the Cougars jumped out to a 11-1 lead and held FGCU the following half inning.
Hernandez led the Cougars as she went 4-for-4 with a single, double and triple.
